Meet Miss Detweiler
Welcome to Kindergarten! My name is Becky Detweiler and I am so excited for the new school year with your children! I graduated from Penn State University with a BA in Elementary Education and a minor in Special Education. This is my second year in Upper Perk!
I love being a teacher and am super grateful for this new adventure! I look forward to guiding your children through their first year in school!
Late Start/Early Dismissal
Classroom Supplies
In Kindergarten we supply your child with everything they need in the classroom. These supplies will stay in school.
We ask that you provide your child with a regular sized backpack without wheels to come to school each day. (The pre-school sized backpacks don't allow for a folder to fit inside.) I will provide a blue communication folder (which we call our 'BEE' folder- Bring Everything Everyday) that will go back and forth each day between home and school. This folder is where you will find information and your child's work that may stay at home.
Please send in headphones that are corded (NOT bluetooth) to keep in school all year. They will be returned at the end of the year. Please label with your child's name.
Please send in a simple snack, separate from your child's lunch, each day. Please no candy or juice for snack. Your child should also have a water bottle, labeled with their name, each day as we do not have working water fountains in the classroom.
Donations of tissues are helpful throughout the year. There are sometimes occasional requests made for special projects so if you're able to donate when those requests come home, it is always appreciated
Thank you!
Curriculum and Instruction
The primary resources used in UPSD Kindergarten classrooms include:
English Language Arts (ELA): Fundations- Phonics, Heggerty- Phonemic Awareness and Benchmark Literacy
Math- Everyday Math
Science and Social Studies
Social Emotional Learning- Second Steps
Purposeful Play is a mindset that is used to plan learning activities in the classroom.
More details about the procedures and routines of our classroom will be shared at Meet the Teacher Night.
Scholastic Books
Every month or two you will have the opportunity to order Scholastic books for your child if you choose to do so. With each order you make, our class will receive bonus points for me to order free books and supplies for our classroom from Scholastic.
The easiest way to order is placing your order through Scholastic Book Club orders online!
Here’s how it works:
- SIGN UP at www.scholastic.com/bookclubs. On the parent page, register by clicking the “Don’t have a user name or password?” link. When prompted, enter the one-time Class Activation Code shown below. This unique code ensures that your order is sent to me.
- SELECT the books you’d like to order.
- Pay for your order online using a credit card and your child’s books will be delivered directly to my classroom when I submit our classroom order.
Remember, placing your online credit card order is completely safe and secure. Ordering online is the most convenient way to use Scholastic Book Clubs. You can order anytime, right up until the online order due date.
You can still order using the form from the printed flyer. If you choose this method, please send your CHECK (made out to Scholastic Book Club) and order in a sealed envelope to school in your child’s BEE folder. Please do NOT send cash.
Birthdays
School policy does not allow food treats for birthdays. If you would like to send in a small gift we will be sure to pass them out, but they are by no means required!
Some ideas include:
Small toy
Pencil or Eraser
Small coloring notebook with crayons
We will sing to your child if it is welcome. Please be sure to email me if you would not like us to sing to your child.
If you have birthday invitations for the full class I will pass them out. Please email me prior to sending them in.
