About Me
Art Curriculum
Kindergarten Art
Kindergarteners learn about art while introducing new routines and enforcing the school rules. We learn about each type of art media by showing it, discussing it, and exploring it. We do a lot of experimenting with mark making and basic art concepts, while reinforcing classroom topics such as (but not limited to) numbers, colors, words, rhymes, recall, summarizing, penmanship, seasons, identifying times, identifying feelings, fine motor skills, my turn- your turn, and much more!
Below are a few "I can" statements to reflect some of the many things kindergarteners master.
- "I can name, identify, and explore basic art materials."
- "I can draw pictures from my own experiences and feelings."
- "I can make art using line, shape, and color; texture, rhythm, and pattern."
- "I can talk about my art."
- "I can ask questions about art."
First Grade Art
In first grade, we continue to practice our school rules and our art classroom routines, as we become more and more responsible for taking care of our own supplies. By using art, we delve deeper into understanding our media. We continue to explore and experiment as a group to make the connection between our supplies and our created artworks, and we start to use our expertise to stress attention to detail. 3-dimensional art is introduced through air dry clay and structural manipulatives. Technology as a group is introduced as well. We hone our fine motor skills through hand eye coordination. Interdisciplinary connections remain strong in literature, mathematics, science, and global studies.
Below are a few "I can" statements to reflect some of the many things first graders master.
- "I can name, identify, explore and use basic art materials."
- "I can name and use primary colors."
- "I can identify shapes, patterns, and other elements of art in a piece of artwork."
- "I can use shapes, patterns, and other elements to build a piece of artwork."
- "I can talk about my art and the art of others."
Second Grade Art
During second grade, we understand what citizenship in the art world means and how to maintain our own presence. A second layer of understanding is added to our supplies as we continue to investigate all available types of media. Connections become stronger in other subjects, especially literature and science. Technology integration as a group becomes more and more common. Now that we have a strong foundation of utilizing and taking responsibility for supplies, opportunities for individual exploration become more common.
Below are a few "I can" statements to reflect some of the many things second graders master.
- "I can explore and use basic art materials to create detailed pieces of artwork."
- "I can gather the materials and tools to explore the idea."
- "I can name, use, and mix primary colors to create secondary colors."
- "I can identify shapes, patterns, line types, and other elements of art in a piece of artwork."
- "I can examine and discuss my own art and the art of others."
- "I can identify a landscape or a portrait."
Third Grade Art
As experts of each media, third graders have a great understanding of each material. We begin to focus more on techniques as we examine the traits of each art making material. Differences in 2d and 3d works are highlighted. Clay creation, 3d manipulatives, independent studio time, and individual technology time are more common. Points of view are introduced as we examine the layers of an image; the background, foreground, and middle ground; the size of an object close, near, or far; and the traits of an object in each layer of an image. Interdisciplinary connections remain very strong and overlap is seamless between science, literature, and art. Critical thinking and problem solving skills are honed, while artistic citizenship persist. Personal choice and attention to detail flourish, as students are able to come into their own sense of artistry.
Below are a few "I can" statements to reflect some of the many things third graders master.
- "I can explore and use basic art materials to create detailed pieces of artwork that reflect my own ideas."
- "I can add detail to a piece of art work and I can decide when it is finished."
- "I can gather the materials and tools to explore the idea. I can put away materials and tools properly."
- "I can name, use, and mix primary colors and secondary colors."
- "I can think critically about artworks, form an opinion about them, and pick out details in them."
- "I can examine and participate in discussions about works of art."
Fourth Grade Art
In fourth grade, we add a fourth layer to our understanding of art making. We investigate each material more in depth and learn specific techniques for each material. Interdisciplinary connections are at their strongest, as our ability to use art as a tool to further explore certain science, social studies, language arts, and mathematics is stronger than ever. We think much more critically when examining art works and we delve into early art history. Color theory plays a huge part in our concepts of viewing art and working with colors; we expand upon the basic color families, learn hot and cold colors, and discuss perspective. While discussing perspective, we learn how to create a layered piece of art, with depth and complexity. Technology integration to create art becomes more seamless as our ability to work independently is perfected.
Below are a few "I can" statements to reflect some of the many things fourth graders master.
- "I can solve problems creatively with different art supplies and techniques."
- "I can add detail to a piece of art work and I can decide when it is finished."
- "I can gather the materials and tools to explore the idea. I can put away materials and tools properly."
- "I can use primary colors, secondary colors, warm colors, and cool colors."
- "I can consider different perspectives and points of view."
- "I can think critically about artworks, form an opinion about them, and pick out details in them."
- "I can examine and participate in discussions about works of art."
- "I can apply my knowledge to create a visually balanced piece of art."
Fifth Grade Art
Fifth graders, being at the top of the elementary ladder, practice art citizenship the most and are constantly reinforcing positive behavior, appropriate treatment of supplies, and creating displayable masterpieces. Art history gains another layer as students analyze art from different time periods and different artists- gaining a cultural and historical perspective. Students examine this work to dissect its artistic elements and successful characteristics. They can recognize, know, use, and demonstrate a variety of art elements and principles to produce, review, and revise original works in the arts that are created by themselves or others. Students can apply traditional and contemporary technologies for producing, performing and exhibiting work. While we continue to practice these techniques, craftsmanship skills begin to be sharpened. Students are also entering an art stage of "Dawning Realism," in which they generally start to admire realistic works, strive to create realism, and face a level of frustration upon setting realistic expectations too high. During this time, we begin to work more closely with abstract art and realistic art.
Below are a few "I can" statements to reflect some of the many things fifth graders master.
- "I can solve problems creatively and collaboratively with different art supplies and techniques."
- "I can gather the materials and tools to explore the idea. I can put away materials and tools properly."
- "I can apply my knowledge to comfortably create a 2-dimensional or 3-dimensional work of art."
- "I can think critically about artworks, form an opinion about them, and pick out details in them."
- "I can examine and participate in discussions about works of art."
- "I can identify and create realistic art and abstract art."
- "I can apply my knowledge and think critically to determine whether a piece of art is successful or not."
- "I can analyze characteristics of art and apply my own knowledge to imitate an artistic style or time period."

What is STEAM Education?
https://educationcloset.com/what-is-steam-education-in-k-12-schools/
"STEAM is a way to take the benefits of STEM and complete the package by integrating these principles in and through the arts. STEAM takes STEM to the next level: it allows students to connect their learning in these critical areas together with arts practices, elements, design principles, and standards to provide the whole pallet of learning at their disposal. STEAM removes limitations and replaces them with wonder, critique, inquiry, and innovation."
