UPSD's First GKC Encourages Kindness Across the District

The Upper Perkiomen School District participated in the 2020 Great Kindness Challenge (GKC). The GKC aims to empower students, parents, families, teachers, staff and the school community to create a culture of kindness.

There were several district-wide initiatives during the GKC, including a “Word of the Day” and Spirit Days.

Each of our buildings encouraged kindness through a variety of means, as well. Some highlights of the week included:

  • A SAGA table at the high school, which included a ‘maker-space’ for students to make a heart and give it to someone, or take one that another student/staff member made
  • The X-Lab made stickers for the week that were distributed throughout UPHS
  • A kindness banner and several Student Government led initiatives at the middle school
  • At the 4th & 5th GC, students made cards for bus drivers, paraprofessionals, the nurse, administrative assistants, custodians, lunch/recess aides and more
  • Dr. Roche reading to Mrs. Levan’s first grade class at Marlborough
  • In the Marlborough library, a display of kindness books; students also made kindness bookmarks and hid them in books
  • Hereford teachers served lunch to their grade levels on Tuesday
  • A kindness tunnel as students got off the bus at Hereford on Wednesday morning
  • The kick-off Pizza Night of the Watch D.O.G.S. program at Hereford
  • Delivering a treat of soft pretzels to our bus drivers and visiting with them
  • Several clubs, organizations and individuals throughout the district made signs, posters, kindness rocks and more to spread cheer
  • Many teachers connected their lessons to the words of the day and completed kindness activities. At the elementary level, Second Step lessons were a natural fit for the GKC!
  • Countless acts of kindness, including yummy treats and kind words being shared
